What you missed on Sunday Kos …

  • Sunday’s comic was Dear 99% … by Matt Wuerker.
  • In “He walks down these mean streets no more: Remembering Piri Thomas,” Denise Oliver Velez explored the life, work and impact of the black Puerto Rican/Cuban author and poet.
  • Armando looked at the interconnections between the Democratic Party, Democratic activist blogs like Daily Kos and the Occupy Movement and considers historic parallels in “It Takes A Village To Make Progressive Change.”
  • Occupy Wall Street is independent of, but supported by and working in coalition with, unions. Laura Clawson took a closer look at that relationship.
  • Laurence Lewis quoted Gandhi.
  • Mississippi is poised to pass a law that says a fertilized egg is a person, with all the same rights and protections as the woman carrying it. Does this mean pregnant women can drive alone in carpool lanes? Kaili Joy Gray answered that and other questions about what the Personhood Amendment will mean.
  • Mark Sumner told the tea party, we are not your enemy.

Earlier today, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain appeared at the National Press Club and and addressed allegations of sexual harassments complaints that were lodged against him when he was the head of the National Restaurants Association. Cain categorically denied that he had ever sexually harassed anyone, that he was unaware of any payments made to the claimants, and then said:

… when the charges were brought, as the leader of the organization, I recused myself and allowed my general counsel and my Human Resource officer to deal with the situation.

There’s one problem with that:

In another odd element to the story, the head of human resources at the NRA during Cain’s tenure, Mary Ose, denied to Politico that she ever investigated Cain or was even aware of the accusations:

“No, I do not,” said Mary Ose, the former human resources chief when asked if she was aware of allegations about Cain’s behavior from his time.

When pressed, Ose, now retired and living in Arkansas, said she never heard any hint of a problem with Cain and female association employees.

“No, none,” she said.

So, which HR “officer” did Cain turn the investigation over to? Apparently one who doesn’t report to the head of HR and is authorized to make pay offs. How handy.

Politico – Earlier in the day, Herman Cain explicitly denied knowledge of any settlement or financial payout related to allegations of sexual harassment, telling Fox News: “At the Restaurant Association – outside of the Restaurant Association, absolutely not. If the Restaurant Association did a settlement I wasn’t even aware of it and I hope it wasn’t for much because nothing happened. So if there was a settlement it was handled by some of the other officers who worked for me at the time.”
